my first shades: questions, insecurities, and a little sense of accomplishment...

I took Avery to Crafty Planet where he (mainly) and I picked out the fabric. The pattern is from Butterick, I think.

We really like the stripe, but we're wondering--now that it's up--if the valance fabric looks like flowers too much. Kinda looked like amoeba-ish at the store, but now not so much...

The next thing I'm second guessing is the shape of the valance. Maybe less curves will help out that not-a-flower fabric. The one on the left is just pinned up to see. What do you think?

Lastly, I'm afraid the tie-ups look feminine, too. (Sensing a complex here???) I was thinking about somehow using discreet hooks that you'd use at the top of a zipper. These will be down for the most part, but we want some way to let light in on occasion. hmmmm... Got any thoughts???

  1. I like it straight across rather than curved and I'd keep the bows, but feminine works for me...also, the print looks less amoeba and more like volvox (image search volvox in google and you've got your fabric!) -- so I'd say not too flowery.

  2. I don't think the top looks flowery - it just looks abstracty. And, I definitely like the straigt across rather than the curve.
As far as the tie-ups...maybe you could rig some kind of pseudo knot but even if you couldn't, I don't think they look too feminine.

    I think they're way cool.

  3. In my opinion if your going for a more masculine feel rather than a feminine feel: go with the straight across valance and lose the bows.

  4. Definitely go with the straight across valance and loose the bows. Otherwise, I envy your crafty talent. My sewing machine sits idle yet capable of taking me places I only thought Pottery Barn could. It's just the skill that is lacking in my home.

  5. unanimous on straight across! this is VERY helpful!!!

i'll try to figure out how to lose the bows. this is the boys' room and i want it to be neutral if not masculine, you know?!

    thanks!!!

if you have ideas on how to lose the bows, i'd appreciate it!

  6. I thought it was a porch or something because of the boots...bows probably are too feminine. Could you do those wooden toggles that they have on jackets...? There would be a thing in the middle of the curtain when they are down, but it might not be too bad.

  9. Those look really beautiful. Okay, let me rephrase... your *work* is beautiful, and the curtains are oh-so-right for the boys' room!

I like the straight valance. And a toggle button is a great idea. I need to hit Jo-Anns for a big button for that hat I knit forever ago, so wanna go sometime soon?

  10. Love them--good work. I would lose the bows and keep the top fabric straight on top. You go with your crafty self...

  11. I like the straight across---not too flowery. The tie bows don't really bother me either. Very cute! I need need to come visit so we can have a project night.

  12. Hilarious, Jenna. I just bought the volvox/amoeba pattern on Saturday for the nursing covers that I wanted you to make--and they are for boy babies--so I vote "not too feminine."

I also concur with the straight across and button theme--nice work!!
